Questions

Questions owners ask us

Choose your pet. If your question is not here, call the front desk; a nurse will answer it, usually there and then.

Dogs

When can my puppy go out for walks?
One week after the second puppy vaccination, usually at about 13 weeks. Before then, carry them out so they can see traffic and people; it helps with nerves later.
Do I need kennel cough cover?
If your dog goes to kennels, day care, training classes or meets lots of dogs on walks, yes. It is a quick nasal drop, no needle, and most kennels ask for it.
When should I neuter my dog?
From six months for most dogs. Large and giant breeds often do better waiting until 12 to 18 months. We talk it through at the second puppy check, with prices by weight.
My dog ate something they shouldn’t. What now?
Call us straight away, day or night, before trying anything at home. Within about two hours we can often make them sick safely. Bring the wrapper or packet.

Cats

My cat hates the vet. Can you help?
We have a separate cat waiting room, cat-only morning slots and calming spray in every consulting room. Cover the carrier with a towel and bring a blanket that smells of home.
Do indoor cats need vaccinating?
Yes, though a lighter schedule may suit them. Some viruses travel in on shoes and clothes, and catteries ask for proof of vaccination.
When can my kitten go outside?
Once the kitten course is finished, they are neutered and microchipped, which is usually at about four to five months.
Why do you check my older cat’s blood pressure?
Kidney and thyroid problems are common in cats over eleven and both raise blood pressure, which can damage the eyes. A quick, painless check catches it early.

Rabbits & small pets

Do you see rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets?
Yes, and not as an afterthought. Two of our vets have extra training in rabbit and small-pet medicine, and we keep the right size of kit and food for them.
Why does my rabbit need vaccinating every year?
Two viral diseases spread by insects, wild rabbits and even on hay kill most unvaccinated rabbits. One combined vaccine a year covers both.
My rabbit has stopped eating. How worried should I be?
Very. A rabbit that has not eaten or passed droppings for more than 12 hours needs a vet the same day, out of hours too. Call the 24/7 line.
How often should their teeth be checked?
Every six months. Rabbit and guinea-pig teeth never stop growing, and the back teeth can form sharp spurs long before you notice a change in eating.

Registering, paying and parking

Do I need to register before an appointment?
It helps, but no. Register online in two minutes, or at the desk when you arrive. Emergencies are seen whether or not you are registered.
Do you claim from my pet insurance?
Yes, directly from most insurers. You pay the excess and anything the policy does not cover; we deal with the forms.
Can I pay in instalments?
Routine care can be spread with the health plan. For larger bills, ask us about paying in three monthly instalments.
Where do I park?
Eight free spaces behind the practice, two kept for emergencies. There is also a pay-and-display car park two minutes’ walk away.
