Most dogs and cats have some gum disease by the age of three, and almost none of them show it. They keep eating through pain that would send us to a dentist the same day.
The free nurse check
A nurse looks at every tooth, scores the gums and tells you honestly whether home care is enough or a dental is due. It is free on the health plan and £22 otherwise.
Scale and polish
Done under a general anaesthetic as a day patient, so we can clean below the gum line, where the damage happens, and X-ray the roots. If a tooth needs to come out, we ring you first with the price unless you have told us to go ahead.
Rabbits and guinea pigs
Their teeth grow all their lives. Overgrown back teeth form sharp spurs that cut the tongue and cheeks, and a rabbit in mouth pain stops eating, which is an emergency in itself. We check small-pet teeth every six months and burr them under sedation when needed.
